Journal 4 of Language Assessment Class

It’s my journal 4, means that it’s already 4th meeting of Language Assessment Class. There’s a new rule for the whole student that we need to speak full English in the class. Of course it’s a challenge for us since English is not our native language. Each student reacted differently toward the rule, and here I’m going to tell what I perceived and felt in the class by speaking English fully.
Though it’s challenging, but it was fun and exciting. Other classes must implement same rule, so students will be used to it, especially we are a student of English literature that is supposed to be able to speak English fluently. We will not speak English frequently, if there is no rule that push us to do so.
If you ask me how it feels like, I will answer that it’s amazing. I hope it will happen every day. Imagine if it happens every day since I was in the first grade, probably I am now a master of English, or at least I can speak English well without hesitation.  But, it was just a day dream, the fact is I still do so many mistakes in speaking English either in grammar or pronunciation.
Suddenly, I was afraid of time that always flows, I was scared of being unqualified English literature graduate. Therefore, I hope that my junior will not feel the same. The faculty can implement the rule to the whole class as one of an effort to increase student’s skill in speaking English language.
I noticed the whole class. Most of my friends looked enjoying the rules, though occasionally they spoke incoherently. I presumed that what they feel is same as what I feel: fun, exciting, challenging, but in the same time, improve our English skill. Sure, it was great, and I would love to obey the rule.

Journal 3: Reliability and Washback

I made a progress! I didn’t come late this time, and I hope that I can keep going like this to other classes. So did my friends. The number of my friends that came on time increased, and it so much better than before. This was my 3rd meeting of language assessment class.
As usual, before we learn new lesson, we reviewed what has been taught last week: validity. Hence, we have deeper insight related to it. We analyzed some test items by contemplating the construct validity of the items, so we knew what knowledge and ability which is going to be tested by the items. Other than that, we were be told several terms regarding assessment like test task, test item, lesson plan, and test taker.
After that, we went on to the new lesson which called reliability and washback. Term one, reliability, it refers to consistency. What kind of consistency? The test. Thus, the result of the test is consistent, hence it can be said that the test is reliable. Reliability of test can be caused by several factor, such as student-related reliability, it came from the condition of the student itself who became a test taker. How is health condition of the student when the test is held? Is he in trouble or not? However, it also can be effected not only by the student, but also by the examiner. Does the examiner teach lesson which is tested? Does he oversee the student when the exam is held? It is called scorer-related reliability. It is also influenced by all the things related to the time when the test is held e.g. conducive situation and clear test item paper. Anyway, this is what frequently happens during examination: unclear test item. Such things called test administration reliability. The test is reliable depends on the test itself, it is known as test reliability. In brief, reliability is essentially a test that you can trust, and to know it is trusted is by observing those aspects, namely: student, examiner, administration, and the test.
Term two, washback also known as backwash and consequential validity. Washback is a test effect. The test gives influence to the way students are taught. For example: In Indonesia, there is a final exam namely national examination that determines whether a student pass or not. There will be several weeks specially to prepare student in facing the national examination. Those weeks will not be used for teaching and learning activity, but for discussing hundred of test items regarding to the course which will be tested. The national examination certainly effects the way students are taught, therefore, basically, it influences teaching and learning activity. Washback is very important since it has essential effect to the learning activity. Therefore, a test must be qualified, thus leads to qualified teaching and learning activity.
Time has shown at 09.30, class must be over. We got new knowledge which called reliability and washback which sharpen our insight about assessment, and I was hungry, anyway! I did come on time, but I sacrificed my breakfast.

Essay: 8 Mile Movie

Eminem as Bunny Rabbit in 8 Mile Movie

The movie was telling us about a young man named Jimmy Smith, J.R also known as Bunny Rabbit who dreamed to be a success white rapper. He had several friends which formed a rap crew together name Three One Third (313).
After fired from his job in Little Caesars CafĂ© and lost the rap battle in The Shelter, a club which usually holds a rap battle in Detroit, he moved back to his mother mobile home at 8 Mile Road where’s the place dominated by black Detroit neighborhoods and white middle class Oakland County and Macomb County Suburb.
At home, he often faced with his alcoholic mother who loved playing bingo, fought with his mother’s boyfriend who also lived there, yet he treated his little sister gently and lovely. His broken home background seemed already made him rude, rebel, and fearless especially when he was facing chaotic, he would turn it into fight. It was compounded by their poor condition which made Jimmy had to work as a blue-collar worker in an automatic factory. Despite all those terrible circumstances, he determined to achieve his dream.
One of his friend named Wink who worked as an employee in radio station offered Jimmy to record his demo by using his connection while after then, Future, his best friend, told Jimmy to follow the Rap Battle in Shelter next week in order to revenge by competing against Tha Free World who was the enemy of Three on Third. Future told Jimmy that if he could beat them and won the battle, it would dignify his team and his own self, but Jimmy denied.
One day he met with a girl name Alex that then became his girlfriend, yet their relationship didn’t walk long because Alex was cheating with Wink. He discovered them was having sex when he was about meeting a recording producer in the Studio. Jimmy then beat up Wink then their friendship ended.
At the same time, his friendship with Future was in no good as he has confronted Future roughly because he didn’t want to follow the rap battle and Future secretly registered Jimmy to. So did in the house, his mother blamed Jimmy because the abandon of her boyfriend then he was quarreling with his mother and brought Lily, his sister, to his neighbor.
He fetched his sister and went home, but suddenly Papa Doc, the leader of Tha Free World came with all his crew and Wink. He knew that trouble was coming, so he told Lily to go inside the house. Wink and Tha Free World beat up Jimmy, Papa Doc wanted to shoot Jimmy with Gun, but Wink prevented him.
On Friday night, when Jimmy worked overtime Alex came to say goodbye as she was going to New York for her career. She indirectly asked Jimmy to come to the Shelter where the rap battle was held until finally he decided to come after and asked his friend to substitute his work temporarily.
In the shelter, Jimmy met with his friends in Three on Third and apologized to Future. All his friends supported him to battle tonight compete against Tha Free World. For three rounds, Jimmy won the battle against different member of Three World including Clarence (Papa Doc), the defending champion of the battle.
He went back to work after that championship, brought cheerful circumstance to Three on Third. He was getting closer with his dream.

Culture refers to the cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, concepts of the universe, and material objects and possessions acquired by a group of people in the course of generations through individual and group striving. This definition is in line with E.B Taylor, he said, is “…that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.”
Culture is the result of the interaction between human beings with all contents of universe. Culture exists because human beings created it and people can live in a culture they created. Therefore, culture also has roles as a guide for human relation with their group, a ‘container’ to express feelings, skills, and abilities, a clue about how human should act and behave in their society and environment.
As the role of culture is so much relates to environment, of course there is some influences which inflicted by culture toward environment. Hence, there are several variables related to issues of culture and environment:
1.   Physical Environment
2.   Cultural Social Environment
3.   Environmental Orientation and Representation
4.   Environmental Behavior and Process
5.   Out Carries Product

8 Mile movie takes place in Detroit where there are many seedy neighborhood, unused buildings, and factories automotive. We can see from the movie that the residents live in a small mobile home which there is a lot of garbage around. Detroit City is known as the center of automotive industry, it seems in the movie when Jimmy Rabbit works as a blue-collar in one of the factory. With such environmental conditions, associated with physical environment, the theory of Environmental Determinism believes that physical environment does influence human action. So, I presume that is the reason why local inhabitant of Detroit tends to be rude. This can be seen from many scenes of the movie when Jimmy’s friend, mother, boss and Jimmy itself often say rough words and act rebel.
The movie represents two races that live in one place: poor black race and middle class white race. It means there is cultural social environment issue that encompasses aspects of culture along with its socialization process: norms, values, and customs. In this movie, the dominance of Negroid or black race make them feel superior, thus Jimmy as the white race often bullied by them. It seemed when Tha Free World mentions that Jimmy is just following rapping, one kind of hip-hop music, assumed not appropriate to Jimmy and they suggest him to ‘go home to mama’.
What interesting in this film is the issue about hip-hop, we can know how unique a culture is. In this case, rap is one of the elements of hip-hop which uses the vocal technique by speaking words quickly. The rapper often says offensive lyrics especially in rap battle that also as a medium of insulting foe. Even so, we cannot judge it as something wrong, even when we see it in moral perspective.
A class issue also appeared here, local people which mostly in lower class works as blue-collar worker. They actually desperately bored with such job that doesn’t change any life better, just in case making everyday survival. The worker expresses their feel in one day work in rap battle when they are in break time.
One most interesting aspect from this movie is how culture and environment can influence one’s personality. It relates to environmental orientation and representation and environmental behavior and process. From the smallest neighborhood, family, Jimmy is broken-home, his mother is an alcoholic who doesn’t care to her kids. She seldom shows affection, and gets relationship with a man which isn’t her husband. That makes Jimmy a rebel person. This is exacerbated by his social environment that also rude. His friend which most of them is negroid talks, acts, behaves rough is indirectly influence Jimmy’s behavior that becomes rude and fearless.
From explanation above can be concluded that the prevailing culture which developed in a particular environment has implications for the pattern of behavior, norms, values and other aspects of life that characterizes a community with other communities.

Journal 2: Validity in Language Assessment

It was my second week of my seventh semester. It was Friday, and I had language assessment class at 07.30. There‘s one strict rule that must be obeyed: come on time, and I’d just arrived at 07.45 which made me successfully late. The sad thing is I was assumed absent, but I still had a good reason to enter the class: that lesson.
When I entered the class, my teacher was had just instructed his students to make a schedule which later on will be used for pairing the student with same free time to discuss about something related to the lesson. Of course, it’s not real, it was like a simulation, but I thought the way my teacher divided a group is unique, and perhaps I should try to emulate his way if one day I were a lecturer.
After every student got partner to discuss, the very first thing to do was read each partner’s journal, and commented each other by giving suggestions. After finishing comment one another’s journal, then my teacher discussed what has learned in the previous week.
If in the first meeting I learned about the concept of language assessment and kinds of assessment, then second meeting I learned about test qualities. There’s a term given to those qualities called validity. What I understand about validity is it reflects the quality of test which shows whether the test is suitable with the lessons have been taught the whole time or not. In short, the test must examine what must be examined. Furthermore, the test must reflect one’s real ability or proficiency has achieved.
My teacher told the whole class that validity consists of 3C: construct, content, and criterion. The first one, construct validity measures hidden knowledge and ability, for example: reading skill. We are able to know singer’s skill by hearing their voice, and then we know whether their voice is bad or good. However, we cannot directly know the extent of reading skill of person because it tends to be invisible.
The second, content validity, a test quality which guarantees that a test is suitable with the content. It means that content validity of certain test can be called good if the test examines what’s should be examined. In schooling context, the test must be suitable with curriculum, syllabus, or lessons in class room meanwhile outside schooling context is vice versa. TOEFL, IELTS, and painting competition are example of outside schooling context of content validity.
The third which is the last, there is criterion-related validity, in accordance to its name, it measures a degree of person according to a criteria. A student can be given ‘A’ by his professor due to particular standards, such as: ‘A’ is given when the result is best of the best, ‘B’ means ‘Good’, ‘C’ means ‘enough’, and so on. This also applied to competition which commonly measure the participant’s skills according to certain criteria. Criterion-related validity consists of concurrent validity. The quality is seen by comparing some of the test results of student. For example: a student got an ‘A’ in every quiz and mid test, but then unexpectedly got ‘C’ in final test. The question is “what is the cause of ‘C’?” is it caused by the student itself, or the test which has bad quality, thus the student fails to get the test? There is also predictive validity which can predict a person’s future performance. It commonly used in IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, or any similar test to know the degree of person’s language proficiency. For example: Score 6 in IELTS is considered as a standard to a person to study abroad, so if I get 7 of  IELTS score, then I know that I have adequate ability to continue my study in UK.
So, that’s all I got in language assessment that day, it was important to know quality of test because a good test will reflect a good result. Otherwise, bad test can affect the result of the test, and it can be predicted that the result also will be bad.

Journal: Language Assessment

The first week of my seventh semester, I was presented a lecture regarding language assessment. My position as student of English literature which certainly studies language as primary course, and simultaneously a freelance teacher who occasionally got confused in testing my students makes this course very interesting to heed.

When my teacher explained the course, my memory was suddenly thrown to the time when I frequently found difficult to instruct and test my student. During this time, when I had to assess my student I only imitated the way my teachers in my college tests their students, such as discussing the course together to get the idea, quiz, or other kinds of formal test without studying it formally. That time, I thought it was no problem with that although sooner or later I shall find it necessary to learn as it will cope difficulties related to such things.

Regarding to my experience, it was right that I need to learn this course as its aim is to make us a good language instructor, so that soon at least I can be a good teacher to my student and help them understand the course with proper tests. Its objective is also in accordance with the definition of language assessment, that is: any ways to help learners develop and gain maximum knowledge and skill regarding language use by evaluating it with many ways.

Many ways to evaluate one’s achievement in language use, and it divided into formal and informal assessment. In accordance to its name, formal assessment tend to be conducted with formal ways, such as:  make journals, portfolios, and tests. Hence, it can be said that formal assessment is planned and systematically prepared. Otherwise, informal assessment is unplanned, unprepared, and spontaneous such as: give either oral or written comments. The formal and informal assessment can be given during the process of learning as an effort to help learners gain maximum knowledge and skills. Such way called as formative assessment. Beside formative, there is also summative assessment which is conducted in the end of the learning process in order to summarize the ‘end’ result of the learners. Final exam is one of example of summative assessment.

Learning language assessment, basically, we learn to test one’s language ability. Throughout my life, I know several conventional tests e.g. examination, interview, TOEIC, TOEFL, and comments. I just have known that those tests belong to different types. There are tests which according to their purposes, such as language proficiency tests in order to know someone’s language proficiency. Thus, TOEFL and TOEIC are kind of the test. Regarding to proficiency, there is also tests according to language proficiency concept that divided into discrete-point tests that evaluate specific skill (such as, listening test, reading test, or pronunciation test) and integrative test that integrates all skills, so it evaluates more than one skill. For example: You’re given a text, and you’re demanded to answer some questions related to the text, then summarize it, thus, the skill that is evaluated is reading and writing. Not only that, there are tests according to their scoring. This kind of test is divided into norm referenced test or usually called as objective test like common tests ( mid test, final test), and criterion-referenced test or subjective test that has its own criteria to score people. Music contest such as Indonesia Mencari Bakat is criterion-referenced test. There are still two more kinds of test, namely: communicative language test which essentially a performance of language use that related to real life, and performance-based test that evaluate you to explain something, such as: IELTS speaking test.

Those things are the concept of language assessment that gives me deeper insight in evaluating and testing language use. Directly, it teaches me how to cope with such hinder. Now, I am not confused anymore and I know that in fact, there are many ways to test and evaluate someone’s language proficiency. Therefore, it helps me a lot to give proper test to my student.

Gunadarma English Club (GEC)

Once upon a time, there is an English club run by Faculty of Letters Gunadarma. This club was tutored by some lecturer of the faculty to develop English knowledges and skills. As time goes by, the club was inactive for particular reasons: the participants of the club became siginificanly decreased until it reached zero, and the club was like an empty-haunted house. No one had ever gone there again.
Years by years has passed. The senior has graduated, the freshman has come over to the university for many times, and yet the club remained empty. No place for the nap club. Until finally….. The yearning of the club started emerging by people who asked and cared about the existence of English club.
The student executive board striked up concerning about this matter, and recorded name-list of student of faculty of letters which only consists of one major, namely: English literature. (At least til’ this time September 2016) But, for somehow after that, no news about the existence of the club. It still invisible, and the students who had expected that for turning into reality was disappointed.
The sun has risen very bright, it was a sign for a good day. Student Executive Board (SEB) Faculty of Letters changed to the new period of 2015/2016. There were two members of Education Division of SEB who proposed the existence of English club as part of the program of education division. Well, it was planned to be a club which only consists of English literature student.
However, the plot has changed, two students from other majors proposed the same club to SEB Faculty of Letters 2015/2016 that eventually made some agreements to form a club namely GUNADARMA ENGLISH CLUB (GEC) which its member not only consists of English literature student but also from all faculties. And so, the story of GEC begins.

The English club of Gunadarma was officially established in January 2016 under the name of Student Executive Board Faculty of Letters period of 2015/2016 as its patron. So, the SEB only oversees the activity of GEC. As the club which has just reborn, the ones who has proposed the existence of GEC recruited a committee to manage the club that later known as first generation of GEC. For your information, one period in GEC is 8 months, and we are now in the second generation of GEC.
The committee consists of head, vice head, secretary, and treasurer. It is also divided into 3 main divisions:

It manages every single thing related to the members of GEC.

Publish any events and informations either related or unrelated to GEC since the informations are assumed significant.

Manage and decide any materials to be shared or discussed with members each meeting.
In conclusion, the club was overseed by SEB Faculty of Letters UG, managed by the committee, run together by committee and members.

We provide a place for those who have same interest in English language and passionately want to develop their English skill. Therefore, GEC acts as media-support for learning and sharing English in various ways that is expected could generate and ideal English skill performance.

First of all, you have to know that we are still unofficial club unlike UKM (Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa), hence our activity independently managed by the committee and run together with the members. However, we struggle to change our status into UKM to be more acknowledged.
How do we change that status?
By learning and sharing together in every meeting consistently.
What kind of sharing?
You can share your experience, opinion, knowledge related to the topic that will be discussed or shared in every meeting. Therefore, we emphasize SPEAKING SKILL as our priority to be learned. Speaking skill is very important because it encompasses other skills of English language, such as: vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and listening. In order to speak up the things you are going to express, you need to prepare it first to get stunning presentation or performance in front of everyone. To prepare it, you definitely will be writing some points related to the topic you’re going to present. By doing so, you also indirectly learn writing and reading skill. We increase those English language skills by speaking, hence we will be used to it, and shall use it to prepare any competition, such as: speech, dialogue competition, debate, story telling, etc. We will practice together when we are going to face the competition according to YOUR interest.
Is there any tutor?
Unfortunately, there is no permanent tutor yet for our club since the club is not UKM. But, we are looking forward for the competent ones to share their knowledge to us. It can be you, lecturer, or whoever as long as they’re qualified.
How many times for meeting in a month?
We do have meeting every two weeks. So, we have two times in a month. It will be held at D61 or tentative. The committee will inform you if there is changed schedule.

  1.  As you can see that there are UK and US flag in our logo which indicate both accents: American and British
  2.  The book and abbreviation of ‘GEC’ on it show that every knowledge we get is sourced from book. It becomes our foundation to gain knowledge
  3.  The torch symbolizes our almamater— Gunadarma University
  4.  The ribbon shows creativity and innovation
  5.  Gold color symbolizes prestige that shows our club is prestigious
  6.  Blue color indicates 3C: cleaver, creative, and communicative. This is also why our jargon is : Smart, Active, Creative
  7.  Brown color on the flagpole symbolizes friendship. We expect that every member of GEC can be a good friend that will bring us into good friendship.

If you pay attention to details of the emblem, then you will find out that it is similar to emblem of SEB Faculty of Letters UG (BEM FSASTRA UG) to show that GEC is part of BEM Sastra UG in the first time, and also both emblem was designed by the same person.

Resign BEM atau Gak, ya?

It was really confusing for me to decide. To make you understand how hard it is to decide, let me tell you my story between me and BEM.

I am kind of organized person, I do always have plan almost for everything including my decision to join student executive board of my faculty in my university. I need to prepare myself to face the end of my college year, I need to pay every lectures which have left behind, I need to make my title degree is really worth by being an excellent bachelor.

Do you know what's most inevitable fact of BEM?

Like literally oh my goodness, ini tuh beyond my expectation. It's not only add the value of my CV later when I apply to company or such. IT IS MORE THAN THAT! Sampe gw tuh ngerasa, gila gw beruntung bangetlah jadi anak BEM. Sumpah ini gak lebay, it's truly what I've felt since I join BEM.

Gak cuma interest gw doang yang kepake, my speaking skill and confidence are also useful here, kalo gak jadi anak BEM kayaknya gw gak akan mencicipi pengalaman menjadi moderator, MC, ketua acara, dll. Apalagi pas jadi ketua acara gw ngerasain lagi atmosfir mengatur banyak hal kompleks since gw vakum beberapa tahun di dunia organisasi (baca: My Organization Stories: From School to University), such as bekerjasama, teamwork yang beneran teamwork, mikirin strategi. I bet I will never forget them.

But, dari semua hal yang udah disebutin di atas, what's most precious is the value of becoming human as homo social was really thick. Di sini gw belajar bagaimana menghargai dan mengerti jalan pikiran seseorang, gak mudah mencap negatif atas tindakan yang diperbuat seseorang because every moves of someone is based on reasons which sometimes can't never be understood by our own perspective. I learned so much from them, and I learned to respect them.

Then, from a bunch of valuable things which I got by being a part of BEM, why did I so damn confused in deciding to resign or not?

Gw mulai ada niatan untuk lanjut BEM sajalah, toh the longer, the more I shall get the experience. Namun, second, suddenly di penghujung periode seolah semuanya berbalik 180 derajat. Gak semua hal manis selamanya manis, there is always bitter memories and bastard people in a splendid circumstances. I know hal itu pasti, and I can fine with that. Tapi, kenapa bisa sampai segalau ini? Karena sangat fatal, and for me, it is intorelable. I dont want to tell the ugly truth to avoid gossip, yang jelas hal ini membuat hati dan otak jadi gak sinkron. Hati bilang tidak, otak bilang why not? I have several reasons to stay. I can say that it is my hardest decision which I need to take because ini perkara yang susah untuk ditinggalkan tapi maksa untuk dilepaskan. Stay or leave? Hence I share my vacillations and worries to my closest friends, and after that, I wasn't get what I really want, thus I still tried to swim in the middle of ocean, and didn't found the edge yet. Sampe akhirnya... due to my weary in deciding the unfixed thing, gw tersadarkan ketika hati kecil gw berkata, "Lista, no matter what you've been planned for BEM which is excellent in your opinion, your calculation and logical thinking shall never able to compete with the logic of YOUR GOD." Hingga detik-detik terakhir keputusanpun gw masih galau juga, so finally I thought that perhaps the first answer of my istikharah is the best way that Allah has pointed me since I drown with terrible confusion. Awalnya memang berat, tapi gak lama beberapa hari kemudian, I was like given guidance for what I need to do during the rest of my time in college year, and suddenly I was really grateful. Sampe sekarangpun, well I am, really grateful for what I have decided.

Gw beryukur atas pelajaran dan pengalaman berharga yang gw dapat di BEM, and for God's sake I will never forget them--- all my friends here, memories, and learnings. Satu pesan buat kalian yang baca ini, if you are a college student, go bustle yourself with student organization, you will never regret your action for then.

Dengan keputusan gw itu, which is resign, everything's back build upon my early plan. Selogis apapun kita, sometimes we just need totally believe in our heart, and TRUST OUR GOD. So, the key is BELIEVE. JUST B E L I E V E!

6 Benefits of Joining Student Organization

Being a student is certainly hectic with endless cycle of assignments which must be collected before DEADline or you will be DEAD on a LINE consists of other assignments *evil laugh*. Not only busy with those tasks, but a college student also hectic with other activities outside campus, such as take care of theirself (absolutely), their bedsit (for those who live in dormitory), their work (to those who have part time job), and other responsibilities which owned by a college student.

However, among those bustles, there are some superior students who sacrifice their time for actively participating in student organization, or in this case: student executive board. Despite of that sacrifice, of course their time is worth the benefit they receive— THE FEEDBACK.  So, take a look of benefits if you are active in student organization.

6 Benefits of Joining Student Organization:

1.      You Know More about Yourself

Parcipating in a student organization means you are under circumstances which allow you to face many people with different nature. You’ll also be confronting many certain situation (through good or bad), essentially when there are problems, obstacles, and difficulties. When you through those things you will learn, observe, and analyse other members of your organization you’re in--- act, speak, behave, organize, and handle certain situations. By doing so, you will know your fellas and simultaneously know more about yourself, such as: what kind of person you are, your strength and weakness, and even your true dreams.

2.      You Learn How to Teamwork and Engage with Diverse Group of People

Plunge into an organization is absolutely running events, making plans, decisions, visions together with other members of the organization. It teaches you how to teamwork and engage with your team that definitely consists of diverse people. You will used to it and learn to control your egocentricity because you will give priority to public interest and general agreement.

3.      Improve Your Skill

Having a role in an organization provides you opportunity to improve your skill either soft skill or hard skill. As there are teamwork and many things to handle, you are demanded to communicate and connect with people. It means you need to make good relation with them, and by doing so, you train your emotional intelligence which is a part of soft skill. What is more is you also have ability to perform your specific skill (hard skill). For example: there are many events held by student organization, you definitely are a committee, if you’re good at photography then you can propose yourself as photographer, if you’re brilliant in speaking then you can be a master ceremony (MC) or moderator, if you have talent in music then you can perform in that event, and so on. Basically, student organization is a perfect place to improve both skills.

4.      Rich with Practical Experience

Another great benefit is you’ll gain many experiences especially practical experiences. You will learn how to organize an event, making proposal, making MOU, being a liaison organizer. You also have opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in class in reality. If you learn about public relation in class, then you can implement it into practical lesson in the organization, such as make a strategy to persuade community or people to attend and participate in an event held by your organization.

5.      Broaden Your Connection

Active in an organization gives you opportunity to reach large network. You make connection, meet new people, build relationship with many part of students and even communities. Therefore your association not only with your friend of your class or faculty but even larger.  In the same time you become Mr/Mrs. popular by being always on in every events. Exciting,  isn't it?

6.      Expand Your Resume

No doubt but having list of organization experiences on your resume will attract the employer.  They will know that you are a hardworking person and can handle multiple things. A company is basically an organization, and when they found you have experiences on it, you get a plus value than others who don't have. In the end, you are worth to be a part of the company. Congratulations!

So, those are a bunch of benefits if you actively participate in organization. No matter how tight your schedule is, and no matter how tired you are, you will be getting the best reward for your sacrifice. Good things always happen to those who sweat more. Go hurry apply for student organization. Break a leg!

My Organization Stories: From School to University

First thing first, I prefer call it ‘stories’ to ‘experiences’ as it is a part of my life stories. Though it’s kind of personal post, but hopefully this post can be beneficial and inspiring to those who read it. I started my career in organization when I entered Junior High School. I was joining student council (OSIS) for 2 periods and became member of Division of Leadership and Politic Education in the first period, and Secretary in the second period. Beside having role in student council, I was also a vice head of Junior Red Cross for 2 periods, member of quiz club and poetry club. I was too active during my early teen-age. Others might leave school at 13.00 while me usually going home at 16.00 averagely. I gathered with my fellow friends in student council and doing many stuffs after classes, such as helping other divisions did their work: enclosed a list of discipline infractions of other students, coached for ceremony, meetings, etc.

"Being very busy in young age gave some qualifications that others didn’t have. I learned a lot of things including see things in organized and systematic view, I was used to many cases, and it made me up a level."

Next I graduated from junior high school, then I continued my study at vocational high school which has a tight schedule— classes are started from 07.00 and over at 16.00 without extracurricular or other activities, thus if you want to join any activities, you will sacrifice your time til’ evening around 18.00. By considering many things, I decided not to join student council or other activities, but unfortunately freshman year must follow one of three obligated extracurricular, so I chose Senior Red Cross as before it I was joining Junior Red Cross, and by doing so, I was be able to upgrade my red cross level from “Madya” to “Wira”. During high school years i was less-passionate for joining any student organization as i presumed myself already had enough experience about it beside I was also bored and felt like I need to take a rest temporarily from having role in organization. In such condition and mood, I was mandated to be a vice head of senior red cross at my school due to recommendation of my senior to be in that position. I took it cause I felt I was trusted and I was just… couldn’t reject it. As a result, I wasn’t doing my role so well :( I could say that 3 years in vocational high school, I ain’t give any attention to organization, yet I didn’t regret it. At least, it gave me such an atmosphere to be a normal student.

That spirit of becoming just a normal student was continued til' I strike up my university life.  However I made some differences and upgrades on myself as a new person who transform from teen to adult.  I still had no desire in joining student organization at my campus, such as student executive board (in bahasa it’s called BEM which stands for Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa, later in this post I will write it BEM cause am living in Indonesia) or other activities. I was like having a high rate in apathy, and almost judge my self as sociopath (at least in my point of view). That’s why I called me as new person who had significant contrast with my old me who was energetic in social life.

I didn’t hang out with friends after class, didn’t care with events in my campus unless it was related to my study, I only cared for my passion and hobby (which is not organization), and for me THAT was enough. For some reasons, it was good tho. I improved my academic skill and hobbies.

Until one day I felt my self was missing something. I just couldn’t hold it for any longer. Living like a normal student, going classes, studying, reading, doing hobbies in locked bedsit without socializing. My life seemed only consists of two colors: black and white.

I thought of being contribute my self in social life. After 4 years inactive for any organization, but leadership skill, critical thinking, public speaking, confidence which I got and learned when I was active on it were still on fire inside of me. I planned to join student executive board (BEM) in the next period, but to warm up I started to be active in organization again by being a volunteer in a big event “Olimpiade Taman Baca Anak 2015”. It’s sooooo FUN! I was going to KEMENDIKBUD RI for the first time for a meeting with other volunteers, acknowledging with new fellas, AND still many more which I experienced from this event (I’d like to tell it, but seems too long, am afraid can’t stand it). The point is after became a volunteer, I even more encouraged to be in part of organization again. Here the day came when I applied for joining BEM in my sophomore year. I WASN’T MISTAKEN FOR SUUREEE. This was what I have missed during the year, and I finally fit into it. This was most precise place to contribute and distribute not only leadership skill, but also my other skills, my hobby, and my passion. My career in BEM could be said excellent, and here what I was doing during a period of my contract as student executive board:

  1. In November 2015, I was a head of two seminars: “A Strategy of Mind Palace: a Shortcut for Memorizing” and “The Significance of English as Part of the Implementation of Asean Economic Community”
  2. Co-founder of Gunadarma English Club in region Depok Campus of my university.
  3. Designing for new emblem of BEM which means I did also distribute my design and photo editing hobby.
  4. Designing for GEC logo.
  5. Being a moderator in seminars for 3 times and once for being an MC.
  6. Being a photographer in Theater Performance.
  7. Being committee in various events related to art, culture, sport, education, charity, etc.
I couldn’t say it more details, but basically my life was no longer black and white anymore. Organization gave my life a rainbow. I was really excited to have a bunch of valuable experiences, great buddies and besties, indescribable lessons during my whole organization life started from school to university.

Also, my life is much more beneficial because there’re a lot of endless benefits and feedbacks when I actively join organization, AANNDDD related to this AM going to write list of benefits of joining student organization in the next post.

Danke, for those who read my blog :)
My name is Lista, and don’t forget to be smart, active, and creative!

TUGAS: Komunikasi Bisnis Rancangan Iklan

Perusahaan         : VICE VERSA
Produk                : Art and Illustration
Strategi Bisnis    : Pengembangan Produk
Media                  : Online (Instagram)

1. Lukisan (Sketch, Portrait)
Pilihan media: Pensil, tinta cina, dan cat air
2. Ilustrasi (Digital)

The way of ideas goes into reality.
